RHASS Select Candidate for RASC Study Tour to South Africa

The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) has announced Jenny McKerr, from Forth Mains Farm in Lanarkshire, as the successful candidate for its sponsored study tour to South Africa later this month.

Hosted by the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth (RASC) Next Generation forum, this unique opportunity to visit an agriculturally rich region of the world and learn about a wide range of farming systems brings together people under the age of 40 from all across the globe who share a common interest and passion for agriculture.

Jenny, who will go on the all-expenses paid 12-day trip, is a recent entrant to farming in Scotland, having bought a 44-acre farm with her husband in December 2016 to support a beef and sheep enterprise with plans for possible diversification.

Gaining a BSc in Agriculture from Auchincruive before traveling the world and spending the majority of her time milking cows in New Zealand, Jenny then embarked on a career with AK Stoddart where she is currently Group Operations Manager.

The itinerary for the trip includes visits to fruit, grain and vegetable farms, tours of the Biedouw Boer goat stud, an Angus cattle farm and Mutton Merino sheep farm, a visit to a game resort and even travel by mule cart to see how donkeys are used for ploughing and harvesting in the region.

Speaking about the once in a lifetime opportunity Jenny said “I am absolutely thrilled to be selected for this tour, and I’m looking forward to learning about their farming systems, seeing the variety of farming enterprises, hearing about how they support new entrants into farming and attending an agricultural show. I want to be inspired and bring back knowledge that will be of benefit not only to my own business, but also farming in Scotland.”

Fully committed to investing in the next generation of progressive and outward-thinking farmers, RHASS Chief Executive Alan Laidlaw added “Jenny is a well-deserved candidate for this trip, having shown her passion, ambition and commitment to farming in Scotland.

“I am very much looking forward to hearing about her experiences when she returns, and hope to share her new-found knowledge with the members of RHASS and our farming community in Scotland.”
